Advanced Techniques Muldowney Physical Therapy Uses
Myofascial Release: Fascia is strong connective tissue that supports the muscles and joints of the body. When trauma occurs in the body, the fascia may become tight. A specialized technique called myofascial release needs to be performed to loosen this tissue so that your muscles will be able to stretch better. Think of a piece of sausage with casing being your fascia and the meat inside the casing is your muscle. If the casing gets squished together, the meat inside would get shorter as well. Until you stretch out the casing, the meat inside cannot get long again. The same is true with your muscles. Until you stretch the fascia out, it is very difficult to stretch the muscle inside the fascial tube.
Craniosacral Therapy: Specific techniques used by trained physical therapist to assist with headaches.
Muscle Energy: This is a technique in which we use your own muscles to realign your spine rather than “cracking” you (called a manipulation). If muscle energy is successful with you, there are many of these techniques we can teach you so that you can realign your spine at home without our assistance. We call these home techniques self corrections.
Self Corrections: These are specific techniques shown to you by our physical therapists which will allow you to realign your spine at home in order to alleviate your pain.
Soft Tissue Mobilization: When a muscle is injured, it goes into spasm, which does not allow proper blood and nutrients to flow in and out of that muscle freely. This slows down the healing process. Soft tissue mobilization increases blood flow to the muscles, allowing an increase in the healing process to occur naturally in the injured muscles.
Exercises: Everyone understands exercising. Do you know that when you are injured, there are certain exercises that can hurt you and certain ones that can help you? Therefore, it is just as important to know which exercises not to do as well as which ones to do. Our staff will give you exact, correct exercises which will help you and they will advise you which exercises to avoid while the injury is still healing.
Balance: Balance occurs at three levels within your body. It occurs in your muscles and ligaments (proprioception), your inner ear (vestibular system) and your sight. We can improve one or more of these levels with specific exercises in a safe and controlled environment. As these levels improve, your balance will improve as well.
Ultrasound: This is a machine used to heat muscle deep within the body. This can be helpful when treating people with arthritis and degenerative changes in their neck, back, shoulders, hips and knees.
Electrical Stimulation: This machine is used in our clinic to decrease swelling in a joint and relax muscles.
Cold Laser: This machine is used to increase the healing process for people with tendonitis and ligament sprains.
“Upon receiving the physical therapy referral from my doctor, I expressed concern about going to a physical therapist who has a record of being very effective. Muldowney Physical Therapy definitely has lived up to my expectations. Due to the car accident, I had limited mobility in my neck that affected other parts of my spine and shoulder. Linda recognized all of the problems and made me well. I could not have chosen a better physical therapist and have recommended Muldowney Physical Therapy and Linda to several people”
